AMA Federal Budget Submission 2010-11

On 16 November 2009, the AMA released its Priority Investment Plan for Australia's Health System.
The Plan sets out the initiatives that the AMA believes require immediate implementation to improve productivity in the health system, place a greater focus on people and their health needs, and improve the quality and safety of health care.
The AMA has re-endorsed the Plan for formal submission to the Government as the AMA’s 2010-11 Budget Submission
The Plan includes a range of high priority initiatives focussing on key areas of the health system.

AMA Junior Doctor Survey Findings

The AMA has released the findings of its junior doctor training, education and supervision Survey which contains important data about the training environment in our public hospitals for prevocational and vocational doctors.
The survey, an initiative of the AMA Council of Doctors in Training, documents the views of those at the coalface – junior doctors – on the training environment in public hospitals.
It shows that more resources are needed to ensure that the quality of medical training in our public hospitals is maintained and improved.
The system is already under strain as hospitals attempt to cope with a surge in medical graduate numbers and the pressures of the increasing demand for service delivery.

AMA Indigenous Health Report Card

The AMA has released its eighth Indigenous Health Report Card, this year putting the focus on the tragic state of health of Indigenous males - boys, adolescents and men. It was launched in Darwin by Indigenous Health Minister, Warren Snowdon, and AMA President, Dr Andrew Pesce.
Indigenous males are much more likely to die earlier from preventable causes than non-Indigenous males and Indigenous females. At every age - from boyhood to manhood - Indigenous males experince higher rates of diseases and conditions that are totally preventable.
There is evidence that the loss of status, self-esteem and sense of purpose experienced by many Indigenous men is intimately bound up with their poor health as both a cause and an effect.
In this Report Card, the AMA sets out some solutions to help improve the health and quality of life of Indigenous males, and gives examples of Good News Stories where innovative programs are providing healthier lifestyles for men and boys alike.
